The grid isn't limited to addition and subtraction. Switch the operation to multiplication for partial-products columns that stay aligned, or to division for long division, where keeping each digit of the quotient, product, and remainder in its own column is most of the battle. Both use the same grid, generated on the same page.
Place-value shading is a second guide option, alongside the plain grid: instead of ruled lines, each column is tinted by place — ones, tens, hundreds — counted from the right so it lines up with the answer. It's the same idea as a place-value chart, built into the problem area instead of a separate handout.
