Why small and roomy works better here

Dyscalculia isn't about handwriting or motor control — the numbers land on the page fine. What's hard is the number sense underneath them: knowing that 7 is more than 5 without counting both out, or that 12 is “a ten and a two” rather than just a word between eleven and thirteen. That gap is invisible from the outside — a child can add correctly some days and be lost the next, and it looks like inconsistency rather than what it is. A worksheet that's correct on paper can still be the wrong tool if it assumes that sense is already there.

Keeping the range within 20 isn't a simplification for its own sake — it's the range where a learner can still subitize, still count on fingers, still build the quantity in their head instead of pattern-matching a memorized fact. Pushing the range up before that sense is solid just trades understanding for guessing.
