Why the numbers keep drifting

A child can know that 47 plus 26 needs regrouping and still get the answer wrong, because the 4 slid a half-column left, or the ones and tens stopped lining up somewhere in the middle of the page. That's a motor and spatial problem, not a math problem — and it rarely gets named to the parent watching it happen. The arithmetic is fine. The paper isn't helping.

Square graph paper is the usual fix, and it's usually the wrong shape. A digit is taller than it is wide, so a square cell leaves extra room on either side — room a hand in motion drifts into. A rectangular cell, narrower than it is tall, gives each digit a column close to its actual width. It's a small change with an outsized effect on whether ones stay under ones.

The regrouping row does the other half of the job. It's a lightly ruled strip above the top addend, sized for a single carried digit, plus a narrow ruled margin to the left of the problem for a borrowed digit in subtraction. Introduce it by asking the child to write the carry in the row before writing it into the sum — the row gives the mark a place to live instead of hovering above whatever column it happens to land near.

Turn both on for a first pass: rectangular grid, regrouping row, roomy spacing, large print. Pair them with two-digit addition to start, since that's where regrouping first shows up. Drop back to a square grid or open space once alignment stops being the thing you're watching for — the page should support the method a child is actually using, not lock them into one.
